Day 3 - New york still raining

Julian caught up on sleep today, so I had an opportunity to browse the Pottery Barn catalogues.  (Man they have nice stuff - why don't they come to Aus?!)

Anyway...so after Julian was feed and watered we consulted Google on how to get to the Circle line cruises and off we went.  It was only drizzling now, so no big deal.  We caught the subway into the city with a bit of help from a nice Afro-american lady with Gold hair :)  This might sound strange but she was quite lovely.  Not like the size 24 woman we saw on the way who had decided that size 12 hot pink jeans were perfect for her (she was exploding out of them in EVERY direction).  I didn't need to take a photo as that image is engraved in my memory forever.

We got off the subway at Times Square and for some reason Google didn't tell us that we would have to catch a bus - that wasn't happening on a wet day with a pram.  So we skipped the sights and crowds of Time Square and walked the 6 blocks to the cruise depot.  We were very happy we did as we has another "Only in America" moment when we saw a guy dressed as Alice Cooper including makeup coming out of Subway - he was serious and hilarious and creepy all at the same time.

When we got to the Cruise place we found that we had missed the last day sailing, so we will have to save that for another day.  We did however see the Intrepid aircraft carrier (now a museum) and a large number of sailors:
The Íntrepid
A glimpse of a Destroyer (left)  and a Landing Helicopter Dock (right, LHD = an aircraft carrier for helicopters) - Steve informs me that the Aus Navy is getting 2 of these.

Then we walked back to Times Square and the heavens opened!  Julian was in the pram under the rainhood and he had a blast bashing the water off the cover!
The next photo was on the subway home - it is blurry as the train jumps around a lot.  We had a nice experience standing at the top of the stairs in the crowd waiting to go down to the subway.  A young (black) guy asked if I needed help getting the pram down the stairs and I said that I already had help, pointing to Steve and thanked him.  There was no doubt that he was genuine.  So far we have had excellent experience with New Yorkers - including some comments about how Julian looks like an angel/ cherub. We try to smile and say he is, sometimes ; )
Then we walked in the rain to the Laundry but we were early, so we went to a Starbucks and had a really nice hot chocolate to pass the time.  Julian was in a ripper mood and was smiling and making eyes at everyone in there!
On the walk to the laundry we came across a couple of firetrucks called to an apartment building.  Very cool.  Unfortunately I didn't get a photo of the truck which has a driver on both ends.  Every appliance had a sticker commemorating people killed in 9/11. I counted 12 people on 3 trucks.
For dinner we went to an Italian place about 5 doors down from us.  The food was excellent and the mexican guy serving us was really nice too.
Tomorrows weather is meant to be similar.  Now that we have our New York pass, we will probably head to some Museums uptown but all that depends on what night we have...

  1. Enjoying your blog Claire! Sorry to hear about the upchucks with Julian though.
Can't helicopters land on aircraft carriers anyway?? Or is it the case of "I'm a heli and not a jet and need my own ship, thank you very much!".
And isn't it meant to be summer over there?? Sounds like Melbourne without the chill factor at the moment.
Hope the weather co-operates and you get some sight seeing in. xx Glynis & Tilly
